The SWAPO Party Youth League (SPYL) in the ǃNamiǂNûs District of the ǁKharas Region has given Independent Patriots for Change (IPC) Member of Parliament Michael Mwashindange seven days to provide evidence supporting allegations he made against the Lüderitz Waterfront Development Company (LWDC) in Parliament on 14 October or publicly apologise to the company's leadership.

Mwashindange called for scrutiny of the LWDC's financial management, alleging that an unauthorised N$200,000 bonus had been paid at the state-owned enterprise. He also called for an investigation into executive remuneration and travel expenditure and raised concerns about compliance with financial management and public procurement procedures.

Speaking at a press conference in Lüderitz on 16 October, Jisreel Naruseb, the SPYL ǃNamiǂNûs District branch's secretary for information, publicity and mobilisation, said the allegations lacked substance and amounted to interference in the day-to-day operations of a state-owned enterprise. “We noted with utter dismay the reckless, baseless and defamatory allegations made by Mwashindange. He has until 23 October to provide proof or tender a public apology. We will not stand by while opposition opportunists destroy the progress made under the SWAPO Party-led government,” he said.

Naruseb highlighted that LWDC chief executive Fluksman Samuehl had publicly invited anyone with evidence of wrongdoing to approach the relevant authorities for investigation. “The SPYL condemns corruption in its totality and in the strongest terms. We request that Mwashindange, his detractors and informers approach the Anti-Corruption Commission with hard evidence rather than seeking cheap political relevance through media headlines,” he said.

Naruseb credited LWDC management with contributing to socio-economic development in Lüderitz and the wider ǁKharas Region. He said infrastructure projects undertaken by the company in collaboration with the government had contributed to economic growth and helped position Lüderitz as a centre for business, tourism and investment. “These efforts have helped attract investment to the harbour town and the region,” Naruseb said.

Naruseb reaffirmed the SPYL's confidence in the LWDC leadership and board, arguing that Parliament should not be used to advance unsubstantiated claims for political gain. “Parliament should not be a dumpsite for opposition gossip and political gimmickry,” he said. He also criticised opposition parties saying, “They are merely in Parliament to line their pockets at the expense of the electorate and to advance cheap politicking while failing to support the Petroleum Amendment Bill, which is meant to provide clarity and a legal framework for investors in the oil and energy sector.”
