Mitsubishi Motors South Africa (MMSA) has expanded its 2026 Triton line-up with the introduction of the new Triton Bi-Turbo, a model developed specifically for the South African market.
The company has also refreshed its Triton GLS range with revised styling and additional standard equipment. The new Triton Bi-Turbo is powered by a revised 2.4-litre 4N16 bi-turbo diesel engine producing 150kW at 3,500rpm and 470Nm of torque between 1,500 and 2,750rpm. Power is delivered through a six-speed automatic transmission paired exclusively with Mitsubishi's Super Select II four-wheel-drive system, which includes a rear differential lock.
According to MMSA, the revised engine and two-stage turbocharger improve power delivery and acceleration while maintaining the Triton's towing and off-road capabilities. The bakkie has a towing capacity of 3.5 tonnes and a payload of 1,000kg.
The Super Select II system offers seven selectable drive modes and allows drivers to engage four-wheel drive at speeds of up to 100km/h when road conditions change.
Exterior updates include a redesigned front grille, LED daytime running lights, roof rails, a styling bar, heated door mirrors and an assisted tailgate.
Inside, the Triton Bi-Turbo features a nine-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a seven-inch digital instrument display, dual-zone climate control, synthetic leather seats with suede inserts, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and gear lever, and a six-speaker audio system.
Safety has also been enhanced with Mitsubishi's Safety Sensing suite, which includes adaptive cruise control, automatic high beam, forward collision mitigation with pedestrian detection, blind-spot warning, lane departure warning, lane change assist, rear cross-traffic alert, front and rear parking sensors, and a multi-around monitor system.
MMSA has also updated the Triton GLS derivatives with darker exterior styling. Black finishes have been applied to the fog lamp bezels, door handles, side steps, rear tailgate handle and trim, while the bumpers, door mirrors and 18-inch alloy wheels receive a metallic black finish. The rear light housings have also been darkened. Mitsubishi said the styling changes would not affect pricing.
"We are excited to welcome the Triton Bi-Turbo to our local line-up, offering additional performance, refined driving dynamics and advanced technology," said Mitsubishi Motors South Africa General Manager for Product and Marketing Lerato Nonyane.
She said the updates were introduced while maintaining the Triton's value proposition and adding more standard equipment and technology.
"The South African bakkie customer continues to evolve, with buyers expecting capability, styling, advanced technology, comfort and value. The updated Triton range, spearheaded by the new Bi-Turbo, has been developed to meet those expectations," Nonyane said.
Mitsubishi also highlighted the Triton's motorsport pedigree, noting that Team Mitsubishi Ralliart won the 2025 Asia Cross Country Rally with the Triton rally bakkie. The team is expected to defend its title in the 2026 event with a three-vehicle entry.
