Zaamwani appoints new Fishcor board

The Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Land Reform, Inge Zaamwani, has handed over letters of appointment to the newly appointed Board of Directors of the Fish Corporation of Namibia (Fishcor).

The new board members are Teofilus Nghitila (chairperson), Josefina Nekongo (deputy chairperson), Dr John Steytler, Edmund Buys, Ndeyapo Ekandjo, Epsom Jossop and Alisa Jacob.

Zaamwani expressed confidence in the new board, saying its appointment comes at an important time as Fishcor seeks to strengthen governance, improve financial accountability and restore public confidence in the corporation.

A key priority for the board will be strengthening financial governance and internal controls. It will also be expected to ensure that legal and governance matters are properly managed and that conflicts of interest are declared and addressed.

“Fishcor requires strong governance, accountability and strategic leadership. The board has an important responsibility to restore confidence in the corporation and ensure that it operates effectively, transparently and in accordance with its mandate,” Zaamwani said.

The board has been tasked with providing strategic oversight and ensuring the effective implementation and monitoring of Fishcor’s integrated business and strategic plans.

Zaamwani called on the board to finalise the corporation’s Integrated Strategic Business Plan.

“Fishcor’s strategic direction must be aligned with the priorities of the Sixth National Development Plan (NDP6) and contribute meaningfully to national objectives, including sustainable economic development, food security and employment creation,” she said.

The board will operate within the applicable legal and policy framework, including the Companies Act, Fish Corporation of Namibia Act and Marine Resources Act, as well as relevant fisheries policies. It will also provide oversight to ensure that management delivers on Fishcor’s approved plans.

Zaamwani wished the new board well and reaffirmed her confidence in its ability to lead Fishcor into a new phase of institutional strengthening and improved performance.
