The newly elected mayor of Lüderitz, Brigitte Fredericks, has pledged to serve the people of the harbour town with integrity, courage and through the production of results.
“I commit to governing with transparency, accountability, and fairness. I commit to listening before leading and to putting the interests of our people above all else,” Fredericks said in her first speech, delivered on 6 December at the Lüderitz Council Chambers.
Fredericks, who served as mayor (2020) and deputy mayor (2023), pledged to prioritise service delivery, economic development, job creation, housing, safety, and environmental sustainability. “We will do so with clarity, compassion, and determination. Your hopes, your challenges, and your aspirations are the compass that will guide every decision we make. It will no longer be business as usual, it will be business unusual. Boots on the ground, sleeves rolled up. This journey is bigger than a position, it is a calling and a responsibility. The trust my community placed in me will not be in vain.” Fredericks said.
The mayor highlighted that Lüderitz stands at a defining moment. “We have a unique chance to reshape our future with the growth of the green hydrogen industry, the expansion of our port, and the opportunities in tourism, oil and gas fisheries, and infrastructure. Progress must, however, uplift all our communities, from the youth seeking opportunity to the elderly who built this town with their hands and hearts,” she said.
Fredericks also urged the residents of Lüderitz to move forward with unity. “Our town is rich in history, culture, natural beauty, and above all, in the spirit of its people. Together, we must build on that foundation not as individuals or factions, but as one community. Let us join hands in building a stronger, modern, and more inclusive Lüderitz. Change is not the task of government alone, it is the responsibility of all who call this town home,” the mayor said.
Gideon Kalenga was elected as the deputy mayor. The other three management committee members, all from Swapo, are Ockert Theron (Chairperson of the Management Committee), Venousheko Manunga and Bessly Makaula. Nehemia Mutaleni and Tutaleni Batromeus are the other two council members.
